When I was a kid, I read "All's Quiet on the Western Front" by Erich Maria Remarque, and I've never forgotten it. You're correct that we cannot even conceive of a war situation in our backyard, not to mention survive it. If you are predicting that civil war is imminent, it's too late to prepare. Our soft culture and cushy lifestyles don't support that. Best to try to keep the peace. The war we should be preparing for, and probably won't, is against climate change, because that will cause the mother of all migrations, food fights and water wars. Everyone should think about all these things long and hard. Will we? Probably not. Thanks for this piece. It's time we start considering what MIGHT happen instead of what we hope will happen. :D
