I’ve had parents threaten to fire me for giving their kids generous Bs over papers filled with bad sources and typos. I’ve had parents call me three times a day, acting contrite on behalf of their son who skipped eight weeks of a semester. They ask, “How can he make it up?”
Devastating. I gave up teaching organic chemistry because parents threatened to sue if I didn't give their kid an A so he could get into med school. The dean caved to the parents. How can we ever fix this? Great piece, Jessica, although the truth hurts and is very depressing.
