Further, I have to say, after reading other comments, that those suggestions were in no way suggesting "dumbing down." For serious medical, technical, or science articles, there are journals for readers who are seeking those. But for the "average" reader (and I'm speaking as a former college professor of organic chemistry, here), engagement means reaching out at the reader's level, in hopes of elevating that level. That's the opposite of dumbing down, and whoever said that might want to have a second think about it. Thanks for letting me vent.
