Sadly, John, herbicides and pesticides are in widespread use down here. Still. There is an increasing number of organic farmers now, judging from the booths at the market, but it’s quite serious. Hungry people have different priorities. My host’s daughter recently completed her PhD in agricultural studies with the goal of teaching farmers how to grow organically. Progress is being made, but it’s sad nevertheless. I’ve been here several days and have yet to be bitten by a mosquito. That’s unbelievable to me. Sigh.
