Thus the back of the neck of my instrument was to be a wonder: a narrow strip of purpleheart between two slivers of blond maple, sandwiched between nicely figured walnut. The neck would be slender, but strong, with a solid steel core, and an elegant nock at the top where the player’s thumb would rest nicely.
